USLR Show Rules
The United States Lipizzan Registry (USLR) will sanction any horse show sponsored by a regional Lipizzan club which is a Member Club of the USLR providing that the following has been done:
1. The regional Lipizzan club submits a fee of $10 for recognition of locally sponsored horse shows; and
2. Before the end of the USLR fiscal year (October31), each regional Lipizzan club wishing to become a Member Club of the USLR will forward $1.00 to the USLR for each member they have on their records for that year, together with a list of the name and addresses of each member.
3. The OFFICIAL USLR MEMBERSHIP FORM will be inserted in all prize lists and show programs.
4. The Show Secretary is required to forward show results to the USLR office within two weeks of the show.
USLR SHOW RULES
I. In order to show at a USLR sanctioned event, all horses must be registered with the United States Lipizzan Registry.
2. If under one year of age, horse must be eligible for registration there in and application applied for. A horse may not be shown under saddle unless it has reached its third birthday (as of day it was born).
3. A copy of the horse’s REGISTRATION PAPERS or REGISTRATION APPLICATION is required with ALL entries. Management will refuse entry unless the necessary papers are received prior to the commencement of the show in which case entry fees and stall fees will be non-refundable.
4. All entries must be entered under their full registered name and number, and in the name of the currently registered owner(s) or lessor.
5. Owner(s) or lessor must be a member in good standing with the USLR or Lipizzan Club (Insert Club Name). Multiple ownership requires one owner to be a member of one of the organizations listed above. A NON-MEMBER OF THE USLR OR MEMBER CLUB (Insert Club Name) WILL BE ASSESSED A $5.00 FEE PER HORSE PER CLASS ENTERED.
6. Negative Coggins test and health papers will conform with the hosting state’s rules. (Show Management to insert health criteria in prize list). A copy of such Coggins tests and health papers must accompany entries or must be shown at the Secretary’s Office prior to unloading at the event. Management will refuse entry unless the necessary Coggins test and health papers are received prior to the commencement of the show in which case entry fees and stall fees will be non-refundable.
7. Entries must be serviceably sound and in good condition.
8. Horses will be exhibited in the most natural way possible. Manes, forelocks, and tails may be left long and flowing. (An area not to exceed four inches may be clipped from the mane behind the ears to accommodate the crownpiece of the bridle.) Manes may be braided in the same manner as hunters or dressage horses, at the owner’s discretion. Tails may not be braided, except in hunter classes.
9. Every class offered herein which is covered by the rules and specifications of the current USLR or AHSA Rule Books will be conducted and judged in accordance there with.
10. No one shall approach a judge unless she first obtains permission from the Show Committee, Steward or Technical Delegate who shall arrange an appointment with the judge at a proper time and place. No exhibitor has the right to inspect the judge’s cards without the judge’s permission.
11. All junior riders cannot ride anywhere on the show grounds without wearing protective headgear passing standard tests. Harnesses must be secured and if said headgear has a brim, it must be flexible or semiflexible. Any rider violating this rule at any time must immediately be prohibited from further riding until his headgear is properly in place. Adults are encouraged to comply with this rule, however, it is not mandatory. Adults entered in hunter classes must wear hard hats when jumping anywhere on the show grounds.
12. Each show committee will appoint a designated individual to act as show steward or technical delegate who will keep himself available to judges, exhibitors and management at all times to clarify the application of show rules and investigate any situation where the rules are not upheld.
DRESSAGE DIVISION
The regional Lipizzan club will select whichever dressage levels and tests best suit their schedule. The Dressage Division is open to purebreds or partbreds. Training Level may be shown in small arena, 20m by 40m. All other classes must be shown in large arena, 20m by 60m. Each exhibitor is responsible for knowledge of the AHSA Rules concerning dressage, as set forth in the 200_/20_ Rule Book. The 200_ dressage tests will be used. Rider to specify on entries which tests at which level will be ridden. A schedule showing times when individual horses will compete will be available at the Show Secretary’s office prior to the commencement of the show with POST ENTRIES ACCEPTED ONLY IF TIME AND MANAGEMENT PERMITS.
PERFORMANCE CLASSES
All Lipizzan classes are open to purebreds and crossbreds. Class can be split between purebreds and crossbreds if entries warrant.
DRIVING CLASS To be shown in light harness, bridle with blinkers and appropriate driving bit, and two or four-wheel vehicle suitable to horse. Conservative dress, no period costumes or gaudy trappings. To be shown at walk: free, regular and unconstrained walk of moderate extension. Collected trot: hocks well engaged with energetic impulsion, not withstanding the slower movement. Working trot: a pace between the extended and collected trot, and more round than the extended trot. Extended trot: horse covers as much ground as possible, lengthening the stride and remaining on the bit with light contact. To stand quietly and back readily.
ENGLISH PLEASURE To be shown at a walk, working trot and canter both ways of the ring. Judge may ask for extended trot or hand gallop. Light contact with horse’s mouth is required. To be judged 60% on manners, 30% on conformation and type, 10% on neatness of appointments. Dressage, hunt or saddleseat acceptable. Horses may be ridden in snaffle, curb and snaffle or Pelham bit; no martingales. TO BE JUDGED ON HORSE’S PERFORMANCE AS A TRUE PLEASURE MOUNT.
EXHIBITION HORSE Open to first twelve entries received. Owner or trainer may elect to ride a 2-1/2 minute exhibition showing the horse to his best advantage OR to set the horse free for 2-1/2 minutes for a liberty-style exhibition, costumes permitted. Audience to choose the winner by applause.
HUNTER OVER FENCES Open to horses and riders of any age. To be judged on performance and soundness with emphasis on manners. Fences to be _ feet (Show management to insert fence height and/or divide fence class into further divisions if entries so warrant or show committee so decides). The course diagram will be available at the Show Secretary’s office by _a.m./p.m. Hard hats required during class and schooling. A rotating jumping order will be established and posted for all class over fences. All horses must be ridden in the posted order. Riders or trainers who have conflicts due to multiple entries in a class must see the paddock master so that necessary adjustments can be made.
HUNTSEAT EQUITATION Open to all ages. Riders to show at a walk, trot and canter and judged on hands, position in motion, and appointments of horse and rider. Martingales not permitted.
HUNTER UNDER SADDLE To be shown at a walk, working trot and canter both ways of the ring. Light contact with the horse’s mouth is required. Horses should be obedient, alert, responsive and move freely. They should not be eliminated for slight errors. Horses may be required to gallop collectively one way of the ring at the Judge’s discretion, but never more than eight at one time. Martingales are not permitted. Horses to be judged on performance and soundness. Manners shall be emphasized and extreme speed penalized.
DIVISION CRITERIA
BREEDING CLASSES Horses to be shown in hand at walk and trot, and to stand open for judging. SEE DRAWING BELOW. A suitable halter or bridle is mandatory, with or without stud chains. No rope halters and rope leads allowed. Whips are optional. Competitors are reminded that neatness shall be the first requisite; conservative and dark, solid colors are recommended. Emphasis shall be placed on breed type, conformation, substance, quality and temperament. Transmissible weakness and/or unsoundness to be counted strongly against breeding stock. ALL 1ST AND 2ND PLACE WINNERS MUST SHOW IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP CLASS OR FORFEIT ALL PRIZES AND RIBBONS.
It is the decision of Show Management to determine the sex and age split between breeding division classes. For instance, should entries warrant or the show committee so decide, a yearling and under class can be added in the partbred division and the stallion/gelding classes can be split into separate divisions. The show management reserves the right to split or combine classes as necessary. PUREBRED LIPIZZAN STALLION/GELDING Colts & Geldings, yearling and under Colts & Geldings, two and three year olds CHAMPION/RESERVE CHAMPION
EUROPEAN TRIANGLE 1st – Walk to apex of triangle; Stand horse “open” for judging. 2nd – Walk the small triangle, taking the line of the left side. 3rd –Trot the large triangle in the same direction, then leave unless the judge has a request.

GROUP BREEDING CLASSES All horses shown in a group class must have been shown in their own individual class. Entries in Produce of Dam or Get of Sire classes must be made by the owner of the dam/sire or with written permission from the owner. Open to purebred and partbred horses. Dam and/or Sire need not be present.
Produce of Dam – two or three offspring of same mare, entered under mare’s name, multiple ownership permitted.
Get of Sire – two or three offspring of his get to be judged, entered under sire’s name, multiple ownership permitted.
SUITABILITY Dressage horses NOT shown above first level. To be shown at a walk, working trot and canter both ways of the ring. Judge may ask for extended trot or hand gallop. Light contact with the horse’s mouth is required. To be judged 60% on manners, 30% on conformation and type, 10% neatness of appointments. Dressage or huntseat acceptable. Snaffle bits only; no martingales. TO BE JUDGED ON THE HORSE’S PERFORMANCE AS A POTENTIAL DRESSAGE MOUNT.
WESTERN EQUITATION Open to all ages. Only one hand to be used on reins. Hand to be around the reins. When end or split reins fall on the side of reining hand, one finger between the reins is permitted. When using romal, no finger between reins is allowed. Rider may hold romal to keep it from swinging and to adjust the position of the reins provided it is held at least 16 from the reining hand. Riders will be judged on seat, hands, performance of horse, appointments of horse and rider and suitability of horse to rider. Results as shown by the performance of the horses are NOT to be considered more important than the method used in obtaining them.
WESTERN PLEASURE Horses to be shown at a walk, jog trot and lope both ways of the ring on a reasonably light rein. Judge may ask for lengthened trot or hand gallop. To be Judged 60% on manners, 30% on conformation and type, 10% neatness of appointments (Silver not to count). All horses being considered for an award are required to back in a straight line. Any western-type saddle acceptable. Horses may be ridden in any western-type bit with flat leather chin strap or curb chain at least 1/2“ in width.
